NAME: Coriander Bliss
CANON: Original
AGE: 15
CANON POINT: After making the Final Choice, one month later
HISTORY: Coriander, or Cori for short, is the middle child of the Bliss family and the future heir to their bakery. She was fascinated by the "magic" of her family since her youth, knowing the secret recipes and words for almost every snack her family made, and could usually be seen with several amulets and written wards on her person. Despite this slight eccentricity, she was actually fairly popular in school for both her cheerful personality and willingness to share free samples.
However, the day eventually came when magic started to come into the world, or, as Cori put it, "come back." It started with a dream, where she met a talking mushroom creature named Fern, that claimed to have a message from a separate world that had become entwined with their own: the world of Animon. She and some selected others were meant to protect their world by stopping the intrustions that happened. After the dream, Cori woke to find Fern sleeping on her bed, and a watch that provided more information about the new powers she would have gained from this entanglement, as well as Fern's abilities and a hammerspace inventory.
Cori would go on to meet the rest of the chosen group: the genre-savvy Kenta, the tech geek Everett, the jock Ryota, and the mysterious adult Peter. Their very first fight against an intruding group of rodent Animon almost turned into a fight between the party members when Peter knocked out a unique Animon, preventing Kenta from sealing it and leading to him kicking the man in the leg. Cori was able to use some of her snacks to calm both of them down, and eventually Kenta managed to revive and seal the Animon he wanted.
After the intrusion cleared up, Cori suggested that the group come back to her house to talk to her grandmother, who would be interested in their story and hopefully be able to explain more about magic. Only Kenta and Ryota were able to make it though. Granny Bliss was happy to welcome the group and feed them, while teasing Cori a bit about her "new boyfriend."
Their second mission would take them to an unfinished construction site, now infested with Animon. When they reached the top, where they discovered a cloudlike bird Animon who was in a manic, mutated state, unable to properly speak and begging to be defeated. It was also revealed that she had previously loved Archimedes, Peter's first companion, but he had forgotten her. She couldn't be helped, and the team was forced to defeat her. She disappeared, leaving behind an engraved gem.
After that, though, the group encountered a situation similar to the fog that had surrounded the areas of their previous missions, but without any alert directed at them. They soon realized another group, Legerdemain, had gained Animon and powers of their own, and ended up battling. Despite the attempts of the leader Wallace to get them to hate each other, it turned out the other group included one of Ryota's old friends and Peter's brother James, along with a girl named Viktoria, whose family owned a rival bakery to the Bliss', and who Cori attempted to befriend. It seemed to work, since she came to Cori's house to play a board game together later on.
Their next mission led them to an abandoned subway tunnel, where they found an old tank, which Peter stayed behind to investigate. This meant that he wasn't there when they met the next mutated Animon, a rock snake that had previously known Borchev, Kenta's first companion. When he was defeated, he didn't disappear immediately, but before they could ask him more questions Peter came barrelling at him with a tank. Since he couldn't hear them, Cori threw herself in the way to get him to stop. Instead, there was a bright flash and both the tank and the mutant disappeared, leaving behind "Peter" with glowing eyes. The being now possessing him claimed to be a god of the Animon world who had been sealed away, and required the gems the mutants were leaving behind to regain his true form. The group accepted this, and he ended up staying at Cori's house, masquerading as her "Uncle Archie."
Right after that, though, she was attacked by a ninja named Luke who was apparently opposed to said god. Cori managed to not tell him anything important, and got Fern to bring Archie over for intimidation by bluffing him. Luke ran away after being found out, but called Cori "Mom" once, making her blink. And then when their next mission brought them to a death trap water park, he called Kenta "dad" as well. Cori quickly decided to accept responsibility for him, and after defeating the boss Animon of that place invited him to dinner. He ended up going with a pair of people who were also from the Animon world, but she did bring Kenta back to her house due to him being badly injured in the fight. The two had a bit of a talk, and finally had their official first kiss.
Their next mission would involve a runaway train and a pair of electric spider Animon, and also ended up attracting the notice of a government agency. Despite the fears of most of the group, they turned out to be quite reasonable and even willing to help protect the party's families. They also told the group that they had apparently determined the next place of intrusion to be an anime convention, and gave the entire group tickets to said convention. While the two Animon they met during said intrusion seemed to be perfectly lucid, revealing the fates of their companions let to them going mutated and manic as well. The group won this fight as well, but were informed that a dark portal had opened above a tower far from the convention, and they rushed to make it there.
The tower was full of annoying puzzles, but after solving them all Cori faced off with Viktoria. She managed to convince Viktoria that she didn't need Wallace to summon the Animon God to grant her wish of being beautiful, and ended up kissing her as well. However, when they reached the tower summit, they discovered that James was already hard at work on a device to summon the Animon God to bring his brother back. It was also revealed that Archie was, in fact, the one sponsoring Legerdemain, and was not the Animon God, but in fact the Glitch God, who had been previously sealed. The machine worked, and he regained his full form. Everett tried to use a Master Seal on said god, but he simply switched it with a random stone from Peter's pocket and crushed it instead. Luckily, they were saved by an onion fairy Animon who had control over time, who brought them into a space outside of time. Iris, a servant of the true Animon God, told them that she would try and unlock their true powers, which would require them facing their worst fears. All of them accepted this.
Cori's worst fears made manifest were mostly repeats of the battles they had been through before, but with her companions dying or being fatally maimed at the end instead. Finally, after a repeat of the incident with Peter and the tank where he was actually pierced through instead of her, she encountered her "other self," who claimed they were unable to help anyone. Cori refuted this quite fiercely, and managed to convince said other self to join back up with her. She gained a unique marking on her hand after this, to symbolize it. According to Iris, this would allow their Animon to reach a stage of Metamorphosis that was only possible with a human partner. The previous mutated Animon had been close to attaining that state, but incapable of control. After facing them in a practice battle, they finally setting off for the final battle in a ship that Everett had designed and the MIB had built for him.
The final battle was hectic, with the Glitch God summoning multiple minions at a time while shielding himself from any attacks that came at him. However, with the help of the strange stone that he had inadvertently swapped to Everett, Peter was freed and the god defeated with one final punch from Ryota. The true Animon God appeared to congratulate them, and warned them that "killing" the Glitch God would allow him to respawn. It was eventually decided that they would seal him away permanently, but doing so would also seal the connection between the two worlds. Cori bid Fern and her other Animon farewell, and Peter decided to travel to the other world due to being legally dead in this one. Since they had kept their powers, the Bliss bakery continued running with real magic behind it, and Viktoria was brought into the Bliss home, with her, Kenta, and Cori all being in a relationship together.
PERSONALITY: Cori is usually cheerful towards everyone by default, and is perfectly capable of keeping a pleasant expression and demeanor even around someone she absolutely despises. On the other hand, she's not likely to keep up this facade around people who have actively endangered her loved ones, and in such circumstances feels much more free to show off her angered side. She's actually learned a lot of curse words from customers and she'll be happy to use them.
Most of the time, she will try to play peacekeeper and keep everyone calm, and she gets easily distressed when her friends set each other off. She will on occasion be harsh with them when she feels someone is going too far, but she will quickly apologize afterwards. She very rarely blows up at people she considers friends, and mostly only does that when they've done something really, really stupid. Even then she can quickly shift back to being worried and apologetic. She often acts as the "Mom Friend," fussing over her companions' injuries or worrying about their living situation and diet.
She will happily extend a hand of friendship to anyone, but if she's rebuffed, she generally won't keep trying. Luke is the one exception, due to her sense of responsibility towards him, and in general she will try much harder towards anyone who stirs her "mom" sense. She is also usually willing to forgive anyone if they express what she feels is a sincere desire for repentance, but she won't offer such mercy to the unrepentant.
Cori has a strong sense of loyalty towards her friends, and she is willing to do anything to keep them safe. A lot of times she can completely forget about the dangers of her own situation because she's too worried about what might happen to them, such as one time when she was literally dangling off a cliff but more worried about Luke being hurt. And while she hasn't had to do so yet, she is willing to kill to protect them. Her loyalty extends even more to her family, which includes the people she loves and is dating, Viktoria and Kenta. Both of them have had unhappy home lives, something it hurts her a lot to know. Any hint of someone having had an unhappy home life will likely stir her sympathy and make her more willing to hear them out or excuse their behavior at times.
She believes strongly in the suggestion that a way to a man's (or woman's, or animal's) heart is through his stomach, and definitely tries to make peace or start friendships by offering food to people. This actually works pretty well, since her baking skills are honestly really good. For people she likes, she'll also work hard to figure out specialized enchantments that are useful for their own specific abilities.
While most of the time it never came up in her original game, Cori has a sadistic streak that she rarely lets loose. She knows plenty about poisons, and is happy to incapacitate and poison an opponent and watch them slowly succumb instead of fighting them in a "fair battle" and risking people being hurt. She has also on occasion mused about using her opponents as ingredients in cooking, and while she probably wouldn't do that for real, she is not above using it as a threat, despite her attempt to show disapproval when her party members use such threats.
POWERS:
-Warding magic: Cori can cast wards that reduce specific categories of damage (physical, magical, and crits) by half, as well as prevent status effects from being inflicted. Each type of ward can be activated three times by anyone on her side before it dissipates, and each one can only be cast once per Scene (usually defined as one battle). She can also heal someone of all status effects once per Scene.
-Bardic magic: Cori can play songs that grants all allies in the area either a small bonus to the damage their attacks do or some extra reduction in the damage they take. She can play one song per turn, or two songs if she doesn't move. Each song costs 1 AP, and she has 7 AP by default, which refresh at the end of a Scene. Once per Scene, she can also play a song that can lull all foes up to 2 squares away from her to sleep, although they will wake up if struck again. Even if it fails at putting them to sleep, it will make them move slower and be less able to avoid attacks. Every other turn, she can also play a magically damaging song that will hit everyone adjacent to her
-Shadow magic: Cori's shadow is capable of coming to life and striking out at everyone immediately adjacent to her, and can do so every other turn. Even when it's not attacking, it occasionally changes shape to form runic signs.
-Mental resistance: Cori is immune to mind reading and mind control, and can resist other forms of mind-affecting affects once per Scene. She also takes less damage from attacks based on mental, ghostly, or shadow energy.
-Crafting/enchanting: With the proper ingredients/materials and time, Cori can create enchanted accessories and snacks that provide various boosts. Her snacks can also have various healing effects or influence people's minds in certain ways. (I will always check beforehand before she hands out snacks with such effects.)
-Cooking: Cori is a pretty good cook/baker in general, even for non-magical food.
-Poison: Cori knows about most natural poisons, although it's more from an academic standpoint than personal experience. Still, she's steady-handed enough that she could probably poison someone's food without poisoning herself by accident as well.
-Ritual: Cori is capable of ritual magic to create permanent wards, although most of the time that kind of magic requires a longer time to implement and also needs some sort of sacrifice.
-Magic knowledge: Cori is good at recognizing magical effects in general, although it's mostly knowledge from her own world, which is probably incomplete.
FLAWS:
-Cori's actually not that good in a physical fight. While she's got enough strength to haul heavy trays around and maybe give someone a good bruise on their cheek, she doesn't have much in the way of technique. Anyone with combat training will probably be able to outmaneuver her.
-Cori has a tendency to throw herself into danger to protect others. It only gets worse if they're someone she's close to, but she'll try to protect even near-strangers if she feels they don't deserve to be hurt. Holding someone she loves hostage is a good way to get her to submit or take unnecessary risks.
-Cori is a strange combination of too merciful and not merciful at all. If an opponent reveals that they were controlled or coerced, or shows that they no longer want to fight, she will immediately stop fighting them, and will protect them with her own body if necessary. On the other hand, if an enemy shows no remorse, she has no compunctions about killing them even if they are defeated and helpless, or even asking for mercy. The only thing that can stop her from doing so in that case is if killing said enemy will have negative effects, although that won't stop her from beating them up anyways.
-In conjunction with the "not merciful" thing, she can be overly sadistic, although she tries not to show that openly. But being in a situation where she doesn't really have a preconceived image to maintain might make that side come out a bit more.
-Cori is really bad with technology. She can handle touchscreens and phones, but anything other than that is going to take her a long time to actually figure out.
-After the incident with Archie/the Glitch God, Cori is more paranoid. She does not like people hiding their eyes around her at all, and will often demand they unhide their eyes so she can see they aren't blanked out. She will likely also distrust anyone who has abilities or aesthetics similar to that of the Glitch God.
-She has a slight complex about being "less useful" in battle because she can't deal as much damage. She's a bit better about that after shouting down her other self, but this still intersects a bit with her sacrifice complex, since it's clearly a better idea for her to throw herself in harm's way for the people who can do more damage.
